Signal Measurement Theory

The oscilloscope is an essential instrument used to observe electrical signals over time. The waveform displayed represents voltage on the vertical axis and time on the horizontal axis. By analyzing the waveform, we can determine important signal characteristics such as amplitude, time period, and frequency.

Key Concepts

  • Amplitude: Maximum voltage of the waveform.
  • Peak-to-peak Voltage: Total voltage swing from highest to lowest point.
  • Time Period (T): Time for one complete cycle.
  • Frequency (f): Number of cycles per second (f = 1/T).
  • Waveform Type: Sine, square, triangle etc.

Procedure

  1. Select the signal type (sine, square, triangle, or DC).
  2. Set the frequency and amplitude of the signal.
  3. Click Start to display the waveform on the oscilloscope.
  4. Use the Zoom slider to zoom in/out horizontally.
  5. Click on two points on the waveform to measure ΔT and ΔV.
  6. Hover the mouse to view instant time & voltage values.
  7. After completing the experiment, click Quiz to test your knowledge.
